How to Spot Burnout in your employees? Executive Coaching CBT tips

    September 19, 2016

The 3 characteristics of Burn out more closely

Exhaustion component: This can be physical or emotional exhaustion or both. This is usually is the result of too much work load stress paired with not enough stress management practices and time between stress surges as an offset.  How to Spot it: Someone experiencing the exhaustion part of burnout lacks energy and motivation. They probably don’t invest more mental energy than necessary on any task or problem.

Depersonalization -Cynicism component:  It’s common for people to depersonalize and distance themselves in response to feeling exhausted and overwhelmed as a way to self-protect and a result of negative thinking that comes with chronic stress. This distancing often becomes a loss of idealism and can mean a negative outlook on new or old initiatives. How to spot it: Someone experiencing high degrees of distancing and cynicism is possibly having conflict with and/or avoiding colleagues and possibly delaying particular tasks.

Inefficacy component: The third part of burnout syndrome is lowering of self-efficacy. Self efficacy is the belief that a person can accomplish their goals.  There are two ways sense of self inefficacy develops, one, sometimes it can develop as result of the first two characteristics being over worked and distancing. Inevitably, being exhausted and less involved results in being less productive, creating an internalized idea that  “I am not valued for my contributions”.

Or secondly, the inefficacy part of burnout can develop when there are conflicts between the individual and the job.  For example lack of resources or role disagreements that limit productivity. Sending the message “I cannot succeed”.

How to spot it:  This component often includes reduced productivity .They may complain about lack of control over resources and decisions, lack of rewards, feedback or opportunity despite not being proactive and opportunistic themselves.
